On Saturday  join us to watch the city’s only live, streaming broadcast of the Ironman World Championships from Kona. We’ll feature it on our big screen TV and have food, wine, and beer. Shop, mingle with friends, and watch your favorites race toward the finish.

Outside the cycling world, Dee is an equally accomplished philanthropist and is extremely passionate about giving back to charity. For years, she has contributed to a variety of charities by participating in fundraising events and by raising money for her favorite charity race, the Susan G. Komen Evansville Race for the Cure. Dee is captain of the team, Maude Squad, which her cousin Maude started when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since Maude succumbed to the disease at a very young age, Dee has led the way as the top individual fundraiser of the event for the last three years.

This year the race has more meaning. Only a few months after her 2010 mountain bike victory, she was diagnosed with Stage IV kidney cancer. Since her diagnosis in December, Dee has undergone numerous radiation and chemotherapy treatments, as well as two extensive surgeries within three days. One surgery was to remove a kidney, while the other was to remove two vertebrae. Doctors replaced her vertebrae by a titanium cage that surrounds her spine. Basically her spine is fused from L1 to T11 with three anchor rods that are over a foot long and held in place by nine two inch long screws. Dee was in a back brace for three months yet still her pelvis and hips are turned forward causing her to be bent over in what she jokes is “a perfect aero position on the bike.” Dee’s humor and positive attitude are infectious. She once commented on the cycling connection she has with her Doctor; he worked on Lance Armstrong’s cancer team from Indiana University.

Throughout Dee’s treatments, surgeries, and rehabilitation, she has remained positive and upbeat in the face of her terminal diagnosis. One of her good friends describes her as a “true inspiration on and off the bike, and the sweetest person I have ever met.” Despite numerous setbacks during her life, including the loss of her father at a young age, several bad bike wrecks last year, and a broken arm on the first vacation since her surgery, she has displayed tremendous courage and strength. While she has accepted her condition, she still wants to make a difference in cancer awareness and fundraising to find a cure. This fall, she is excited to yet again be part of the Tri for a Cure held on September 24^th. She says, “I can’t wait to do it again this year…even though they may have to push me in a wheelchair for the 5K! I enjoy helping others so much. This year it means more to me than ever!”

In the last few weeks Dee’s condition has worsened, yet her passion for this cause remains. TriBella was everywhere this past weekend, providing cheerful support at the Iron Girl Triathlon in Boulder and on site mechanical aid at the Venus de Miles all women’s ride.

Did you see us at the turnaround point on the Iron Girl run course Saturday? If not, then you weren’t paying attention…or you were super focused on finishing the race! TriBella was there in full force cheering on all the ladies who faced hot temps and fierce competition. We saw so many familiar faces and hope that our enthusiastic cheerleaders gave you a smile and wings under your feet!

The all women’s Venus de Miles bike ride is always a fun event. This year was even better because TriBella was on site helping riders suffering from flats, saddle problems, and other mechanical malfunctions. James was at Lyons Elementary while Charlie put in the miles on the motorcycle. Both got lots of attention (how could two men wearing pink not get attention!) and were happy to help everyone. They met plenty of awesome ladies and hope you all had fun!

Hi, I just finished my first Tri today, with the SheRox in Aurora.  While on the bike course, I had a rather unfortunate incident, where my pedal worked its way out of the crank arm, and took the threads with it.  There would be no repair today.  As directed, I flagged down the road crew, and the guy who stopped was AMAZING!  He tried to troubleshoot it for me, and admitted he had never seen that before, or had to fix it on the fly.  We tried several options, to no avail, so he suggested that I lower my seat, so that I could pedal and use my free foot to kick the ground.  So, off I went, walking some, coasting some, and kicking/ pedaling some.  The entire way back from the bike turn around, every time he passed me on his laps, he would check in on me, encourage me, and tell me how great he thought it was that I was going to walk in my bike the rest of the way. I did finish the race, and not last! I’m not sure if I would have finished the race today without him, and I look forward to seeing him on the next race.  Tell him the 1 pedal bandit says thanks!

I just want to say Thank You, Thank You, Thank You to James for fixing my flat tire at the SheRox Tri this Sunday.  I couldn’t have finished the race without you!  It was incredible to see how quickly you could change it.  My sister and I are planning a visit to TriBella soon so I can buy her some tri shorts.  Hope you are there so I can thank you in person.
